Is FHE Crew a year-round sport?
We spend all year training for our official high school crew season in the Spring. Each Summer we offer rowing camp for FHE middle school and high school students who would like to try it out or continue training. In the Fall, we operate as an athletic club, participating in races, physical conditioning and fun team bonding activities (you don’t have to pay the Pay to Play fee in the Fall). Indoor training continues through the Winter months but is not mandatory for those interested in getting in shape for Spring.
Can I still join if I am in another sport at FHE?
Absolutely! We welcome you as long as it doesn’t conflict with another sport during the Spring season. Did you know, rowing gets you in better physical condition than most sports as it works the majority of muscle groups, focuses on core strength, endurance and includes even cardio? Hang with FHE crew and be in tip top shape for any sport–maybe you will even win some races!
I’m at FHE middle school, when can I join?
We recently opened up our Summer Camp and Fall Rowing Club to middle schoolers in 7th and 8th grade and enjoyed a great season in 2019. This is a great way to be introduced to the sport and our team and to see if it is a good fit for you. You will be in training with the high school crew but will race in the Fall with our novice teams. We’d love to have you! Find out more.
What if I’ve never rowed before?
You would be surprised how many students with no sports background or ability try rowing and love it! Your success is more about your effort, attitude and working with your team finding your groove. It is one of the few sports that you can start in high school without any training. You should expect to work hard to beat your own times in training, take care of your boats and equipment, become lifelong friends with teammates in all grades and be guided by a coach who inspires and encourages your individual growth. You don’t have to be an athlete, but if you row, you will become one. Why not give it a try?
Do I have to try out or pass a test?
Everyone who rows for FHE Crew must pass a basic swimming test held at the beginning of the Spring season at the Forest Hills Aquatic Center. If you would like to know more about what is expected, just contact Coach Ben!
I’m a parent, how much involvement is expected?
As little or as much as you are comfortable with. We have a fantastic Crew Boosters Board made up of fun and devoted parents who provide support to our coaches and are responsible for fundraising, communication, FHE Athletic Boosters participation, providing shelter and meals for our rowers at every regatta, and so much more! We are always in need of help to keep this team “afloat” and especially need parents of incoming rowers to be willing to carry the torch when our rowers graduate. Please Get Involved and see for the many ways you can help from joining Board and Committee positions, to dropping off cheese sticks and hamburger buns, to writing a check to help out if you are able. We are grateful for any support from our crew parents! We are especially in need of those who are tech savvy, creatively inclined, videographers (drone) , equipment manager types, physically strong and/or willing to offer support on a committee.
What if I can’t afford to pay but I would like to join?
No person will be excluded from membership because of financial need. Please contact our Treasurer to make confidential payment arrangements.
